Cold Atoms
Home
More generally, we are interested in collective effects in light-atom interaction, which include multiple scattering of light but also nonlinear optics or cooperative scattering.
We have also studied dynamics of matter waves with a Bose-Einstein condensation experiment.
Finally, we have been involved in a fruitful collaboration with astrophysicists on the measurement of light correlations (Hanbury Brown and Twiss technique).
Our work is mainly experimental, using three cold-atom apparatus and several smaller hot-vapor setups, but also theoretical, in particular through many collaborations.

Oct. 2020: Open post-doc position
We have an opening for a two-years post-doc position on intensity correlations to probe quantum correlations in a cold atomic cloud, see the annoncement.
Oct. 2020: Welcome to the new members of the team!
Martial Morisse and Stephan Asselie have started their PhD in our team. They will work respectively on the "Rb1" and "Rb2" experiments.
Sept. 2020: Collaborative ANR grant awarded - PI: William Guerin
The I2C project (Intensity Interferometry at Calern) is a collaborative project involving three teams from the Nice area: our team at INPHYNI (William Guerin, Mathilde Hugbart, Guillaume Labeyrie and Robin Kaiser), astrophysicists/astronomers from the Lagrange Laboratory (Olivier Lai, Jean-Pierre Rivet, Armando Dominiciano de Souza, and Farrokh Vakili), and time-metrology experts of the Géoazur Laboratory (Julien Chabé, Clément Courde, and Nicolas Maurice). Our partners operate the C2PU and MéO telescopes from Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (on the Calern Plateau). The goal is to revive the technique of intensity interferometry with modern technologies and use it for measurements of astrophysical interest.
August 2020: Publication in Physical Review Letters
The paper "Photon Blockade with Ground-State Neutral Atoms" has been published in PRL! This paper proposes a scheme to achieve photon blockade in very dense atomic ensembles.
June 2020: William Guerin passed his habilitation, congratulation to him!
The manuscript is entitled "Mirrorless lasing and cooperative scattering with cold atoms".
June 2020: The physics price of the national academy of Luxembourg awarded to Robin Kaiser
Robin has been awarded the "Grand Prix 2020 en sciences physiques de l'Institut Grand-Ducal / Prix Paul Wurth", see the press release here. Congratulations to him! A ceremony should take place in November (if not canceled by the Covid-19 crisis).

Dec 2019: Publication in Physical Review Letters
The paper "Collective multimode vacuum Rabi splitting" has been published in PRL! This paper describes a new collective effects discovered by studying the switch-on dynamics of light scattered by cold atoms.

Research
Our main current research topics are:
Cooperative scattering
When a photon is sent onto an atomic ensemble, it interacts collectively with the N atoms of the cloud and not simply with one of them. This results in measurable modifications in the scattering rate, the emission diagram or the temporal dynamics. We study these cooperative effects experimentally and theoretically. Recently, remarkable results have been obtained, in particular the direct observation of subradiance and superradiance in the linear-optics regime. This research topic is currently funded by the ANR project QuaCor, the QUANTERA project PACE-IN, and the EU project ColOpt.
Fluctuations and correlations of light: from atoms to stars
We study the fluctuations and correlations of light after interaction with cold or hot atomic vapors, either after transmission through the atoms, or after scattering by the atoms, in the single and multiple scattering regimes. We also collaborate with astrophysicists of the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur to work towards the revival of intensity interferometry (Hanbury Brown and Twiss technique) with modern photonic technologies. This research topic is currently funded by the ANR project QuaCor and the Région PACA project I2C.
Nonlinear optics: superfluid light and self-organization
Atomic vapors have strong optical nonlinearities that we use in experiments with hot or cold vapors. In the latter case, the mechanical aspect plays also a role, with the spontaneous formation of atomic-density patterns. This research topic is currently funded by the EU projects ColOpt and PhoQus.
Localization of light
When a wave propagates in a strongly disordered medium, it is predicted that above a certain level of disorder, interference effects completely block the wave diffusion. This so-called Anerderson localization has never been clealy observed for light. We have been studing, at a theoretical level, if and how a cold-atom cloud could be an appropriate medium for observing this effect. We are now building a new cold-atom experiment in order to experimentaly observe this effect.This research topic is currently funded by the ERC project ANDLICA.
Light-induced long-range forces
We also study the mechanical action of light on cold atoms during the multiple-scattering process. For example, it can give rise to mechanical instabilities, which we studied experimentally and theoretically. Moreover, it gives a force that is long-range, like Coulombian and gravitational interactions. As a consequence, there are interesting analogies with plasma physics and gravitational systems. This research topic is currently funded by the EU project ColOpt.
